A bald eagle, from the inside out
×
Adult-form Haliaeetus leucocephalus with the pale iris in the supplied photographs — an original procedural educational reconstruction, not a scan or photogrammetric specimen. Geometry is generated in the browser from anatomical landmarks. Each bone, muscle, tendon, feather, scute, ocular coat and oral structure is individually selectable.
CDN libraries
Three.js 0.169.0 (MIT), embedded in this page — WebGL renderer and surface materials.
OrbitControls from the matching Three.js examples/jsm addons, also jsDelivr / MIT.
No other runtime downloads. Feather, keratin and iris maps are embedded or generated on the canvas. The rendering libraries are also embedded; only external reference links need internet access.
Whole-body atlas · v8 Separate organs, vessels, air sacs, neural routes and alternative female/male reproductive systems are now available in Internal organs. Muscles span head, neck, axial trunk, thoracic and abdominal walls, shoulders, wings, hip, legs, toes and tail. Small follicular smooth-muscle links are representative; sensory filoplumes lack feather muscles. Tendons terminate on modeled flexor tubercles at the claw-bearing bones, with visible sheaths and annular supports.
The animated body uses reconstructed joint paths and attachment-preserving muscle shapes. Displayed shortening is geometric path change, not measured activation or force. In the two long flexors per calf, digital-path shortening drives illustrative tendon take-up and belly shortening, capped at 22%; that cap is a modeling choice. Heart motion and air-sac expansion are slowed explanatory cycles; rigid lungs do not inflate. This is not a full species-measured muscle census, CT segmentation, circulation solver or respiratory flow simulation. Some structures, microscopic networks and tissue interactions remain unmodeled.
Head portrait · v9
The wider skull and cheek, hooded eyes, pale straw-yellow irises, compact yellow bill and continuous white shoulder mantle follow Christian Sasse’s Look up , The look and Eagle staring photographs. Fine facial contours grade into longer neck hackles that overlap the shoulder roots. These added feathers are individually selectable and move with the existing rig; their number is a modeling choice, not a census of a living eagle’s feathers.
The white feather-vane albedo is an embedded image generated for this model, guided by the photographic references. It is not a texture scan extracted from a photograph. Rachis and short edge barbs are geometry; fine barbules and keratin microrelief are texture detail. The cornea uses a clear reflective physical material; a generated studio environment provides highlights and a local shadow light provides feather contact shadows. The beak’s shader adds approximate thin-tissue light scattering, not a measured subsurface transport solution.
Assembled head revision · v10 The head uses a continuous outer surface, a refitted bill and lower mandible, a sloping cere junction, recessed nares and finer white facial plumage. All systems remain enabled by the All preset, but opaque exterior coverings conceal the internal atlas; remove the skin, open an anatomy study or explode the model to inspect it. Optical guides appear in the eye study. The Compare photo button displays Christian Sasse’s unaltered side portrait, embedded in this file. Shape, pigmentation and feather direction are reconstructed from photographs; this is not a measured specimen or a photogrammetric reconstruction.
Body plumage · v15 The former 84 large body contour feathers have been refitted into a tract of 432 shorter, broader, individually selectable contours. Curved vanes overlap in staggered rows from the shoulder collar to the rump, with varied lengths, directions and fine vane texture. Body detail frames the back or breast according to the selected viewing face. Existing anatomy identities and controls are retained.
These are photograph-guided tract samples, not a measured feather census. The body material reuses the embedded v14 generated feather atlas and avoids stretching its central shaft over each contour feather.
Wings and tail · v14 Above and Below show the unobstructed exterior; Wing detail and Tail detail preserve the selected viewing face. The remiges and rectrices have curved, closed upper and lower vanes, individual shafts, fine modeled barbs and a generated vane texture. Twelve separate rectrices form the broader rounded tail, with distinct upper and under tail coverts.
Texture is a generated material approximation, not a measured scan or a photographic extraction. Thickness, curvature and tract placement remain reconstructed. The selectable feather components are a model inventory rather than a biological feather census.

Proportions, plumage colour and feather arrangement follow Christian Sasse’s adult bald-eagle photographs (soaring spread-wing, beach landing, head portraits). Body plumage is dark chocolate-brown, almost black in shade; the adult head and tail are white; the cere and bill are bright yellow; the adult iris is pale straw-yellow with radial fibers and a dark limbal rim, following the supplied portraits; the talons are dark hooked keratin on yellow scaly tarsi.

v7 anatomy and motion patch Four recti and two obliques per eye; jaw and tongue/hyoid muscle paths; separate flexor digitorum longus and flexor hallucis longus routes; hinged phalanges, hooked ungual bones and rigid keratin claws. Ivory tendons end on the ungual bone. Blue dashed guides show force transfer to the claw tips; they are not tendons inside keratin.
Limits This is a procedural educational reconstruction, not a complete specimen muscle atlas. Muscle paths, hinge axes, toe ranges, foveal depth and pecten folds are illustrative. There is no collision, grip-force or physiological tendon-shortening simulation. The hyoid follows jaw motion; independent tongue articulation is not simulated. Ray paths connect the displayed pupil, lens and two pits; they do not solve measured corneal/lens refraction. Barbule texture and geometry represent feather microstructure; individual interlocking hooklets are not resolved.
Geometry and control logic were checked directly. Final browser/WebGL appearance, transparency, lighting and performance still require visual acceptance.
What is reconstructed, not measured
Tissue dimensions, foveal pit depth, pecten fold count, hyoid shape, joint angles and feather sampling are illustrative. The model is not certified as a museum specimen or as photoreal at every millimetre. Layer checkboxes never reset the camera, explosion or pose. Switching “Adult / Skeleton / Muscle” only changes visibility.
